QTUM is a cryptocurrency and a blockchain platform that combines aspects of both Bitcoin and Ethereum to provide a hybrid solution for decentralised applications (dApps). It uses a modified version of the Bitcoin core infrastructure with a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, allowing users to stake their QTUM coins to help validate transactions and earn rewards. QTUM supports smart contracts written in Solidity, which is the same programming language used for Ethereum smart contracts. The project was founded in 2016 by Patrick Dai, a former employee of Alibaba Group, and is based in Singapore.
